Visit the monastery at Jasna Góra and see the famous painting depicting the Black Madonna. The complex, which covers an area of five hectares, is one of the most important places of worship for Polish Catholics. The monastery has been a popular destination of Christian pilgrimage for centuries.
It is not only famous for its portrait of the Black Madonna, which – according to legend – was supposedly painted by Luke the Evangelist himself. It was also the backdrop to many important historical events. The building is an impressive medieval fortress which, with its thick walls, protected the inhabitants of Częstochowa, among others, during the Swedish deluge. Cannonballs, which are embedded in the wall next to the main entrance to the basilica, as well as armour, helmets, chain mail and medieval weapons, are testimony to the war's adventures and can be seen among the monastery's museum collections. The Jasna Góra Sanctuary is also the last location on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.
Whether your visit to the monastery is a spiritual experience or an opportunity to experience a magnificent monument, Jasna Góra will surely make a big impression on you.
