Corpus Christi 2025 in Krakow – Practical Info for Tourists (Processions, Closures, Tips)

On Thursday, 19 June 2025, Poland celebrates Corpus Christi (Boże Ciało) – one of the most important Catholic holidays. It’s a public holiday, so many shops and offices will be closed, and major religious events will take place in Krakow's historic centre.

If you’re visiting the city on this day, here’s what you should know to make the most of your stay and avoid unnecessary hassle.

🕊️ What is Corpus Christi?

Corpus Christi is a Catholic feast that honours the presence of Christ in the Eucharist. In Poland, it’s celebrated with large processions through the streets, prayers, singing, and flower carpets. The tradition is especially visible in Krakow, where it's deeply rooted in local culture.

🚧 Street closures and the main procession

The main procession will begin at 9:00 AM at Wawel Cathedral, following a morning Mass. It will then pass along ul. Grodzka to Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), stopping at four decorated altars along the way.

The final blessing and closing Mass will take place in front of St. Mary's Basilica around 1:00 PM, but traffic disruptions in the Old Town may last until approximately 2:30 PM.

🧭 Tip: If you’re not interested in the religious events or dislike crowds, avoid Grodzka Street and the Main Square between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

🚫 No horse-drawn carriages on 19 June

If you were hoping to enjoy a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride around the Main Square, please note that all carriage rides will be suspended between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM due to the religious procession.

We recommend choosing another day for this experience.

🏛️ Sightseeing restrictions – Wawel Cathedral

  • Wawel Cathedral and the ticket office will open later than usual – around 11:00 AM.
  • The Cathedral Museum will be closed all day.

🚌 Public transport on Corpus Christi

Public transport in Krakow will run on a holiday (Sunday) schedule.

Trams and buses in the city centre will be rerouted due to the procession, particularly around Grodzka Street and Wawel.

From 19 June, Krakow also switches to its summer timetable for trams.
