Long description

Dunajec River rafting – a scenic journey through mountain nature

The Dunajec River rafting is one of the most iconic and relaxing outdoor experiences in southern Poland. Taking place in the heart of the Pieniny Mountains, this traditional journey follows a river that gently winds between limestone cliffs, forests and open mountain views.

During the rafting experience, you will take part in a traditional wooden raft journey operated by licensed local raftsmen, who steer the rafts according to centuries-old tradition. Despite the mountain setting, the river current is calm, making the rafting smooth, unhurried and focused on sightseeing rather than physical effort.

The rafting section lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and covers a route of about 18 kilometers, offering plenty of time to admire the landscape and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the national park area.

Time after rafting – Szczawnica or Niedzica

After completing the rafting journey, the day continues at a relaxed pace. By default, time is spent in Szczawnica, a charming spa town where you can take a walk, enjoy the mountain surroundings or taste traditional regional cuisine.

Alternatively, if arranged in advance, the itinerary may include a visit to Niedzica, with its dam and the shores of Czorsztyńskie Lake, offering views of the lake, surrounding mountains and the historic castle ruins overlooking the water.

Private tour from Krakow

This experience is offered as a private tour from Krakow, with individual transport and a dedicated driver who speaks Polish and English. The private format allows for a comfortable pace, flexibility during the day and a calm experience focused on nature and scenery.

The Dunajec River rafting tour is an excellent choice for travelers looking to escape the city, spend time outdoors and experience one of Poland’s most beautiful river landscapes in a relaxed and authentic way.

FAQ

This is a private day trip from Krakow with individual transport and a dedicated driver who speaks Polish and English. There is no live tour guide during the day. The rafting itself is operated by licensed local raftsmen, who steer the traditional wooden rafts and are responsible for the rafting experience on the river.

The Dunajec River rafting is a calm, traditional sightseeing experience. Participants sit on a wooden raft for the entire journey while a licensed local raftsman steers the raft using a long pole. The raft gently floats downstream over a distance of about 18 km, and the rafting section lasts over 2 hours. There is no paddling, no physical effort required, and no previous experience needed. The focus is entirely on relaxing and enjoying the scenery of the Pieniny Mountains.

It depends on the size of your group. Each booking includes tickets for seats on a traditional wooden raft. If your group is large enough to fill an entire raft, you will have the raft to yourselves. For smaller groups, other participants may be added to the same raft on site, as the rafting is organized locally by the rafting association. This does not affect the comfort or duration of the experience.

Rafting takes place during the official season from April 1 to October 31 and usually goes ahead even if the weather is not perfect. Light rain or cloudy conditions are not a problem. The activity is only cancelled if weather conditions become unsafe. Please keep in mind that mountain weather can change quickly, so even on a sunny day it is a good idea to bring a light raincoat or waterproof jacket.

Local raftsmen usually do not speak English. Occasionally, a raftsman may speak basic English, but this should not be expected. All organization and practical communication during the day are handled by your driver.

The rafting section lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes and covers a distance of about 18 km. The total duration of the tour is around 8 hours, including private transport from Krakow and free time after the rafting.

After the rafting, time is usually spent in Szczawnica, where you can take a walk, relax and enjoy the surroundings. Alternatively, the itinerary may include a visit to Niedzica Dam and Czorsztyńskie Lake. As this is a private tour, the day can be adjusted slightly to your preferences, depending on timing and local conditions.

Amazing views from the raft! It's a pity that the raftsmen speak only Polish - they probably like jokes, because Poles had a great time on the boat and we didn't understand anything, but it was nice because of the views and good energy Our driver, however, spoke perfect English and our trip was great. After the rafting trip, we went for dinner, we tried delicious Polish food - the city of Szczawnica is also very charming! I highly recommend!
