The Zakrzówek Pools in Krakow: A Miniature Croatia in the Heart of the City
Opening of the Zakrzówek Pools: A New Era for Outdoor Recreation
The Zakrzówek pools in Krakow, often referred to as a miniature Croatia, officially opened on June 22. Prior to the formal opening, visitors could enjoy the facility, but it was at their own risk, as indicated by signs around the pools.
From Quarry to Urban Oasis: The Transformation of Zakrzówek
Four years ago, Zakrzówek was a wild and unguarded swimming area, established on post-industrial land, after an old, fairly deep quarry was flooded in 1990. Located less than 3 km from the city center, this lush, green area has quickly become a significant attraction for Krakow residents.
The Floating Pools: A Unique Feature of Zakrzówek
The highlight of Zakrzówek is the five floating pools of varying sizes and depths. The shallowest pool is 40 cm deep, while the deepest exceeds 2 m. The two largest pools are each 70 m in length. Attached to the quarry walls, these pool structures float on the water, supported by air brackets. Each pool is surrounded by 8 m wide wooden platforms for sunbathing. The Zakrzówek rocks resemble the landscape of the Croatian coast.
Beyond Swimming: Zakrzówek as a Comprehensive Sports Complex
In addition to the pools, the area also features running paths, rollerblading and cycling tracks, and gyms. The sports complex was designed in consultation with scientists from the Academy of Physical Education. Facilities including changing rooms, showers, and a café are already available, and a viewing terrace is also part of the design. There are plans to build a Water Sports Center that will be used by professional athletes.
Access and Pricing: A Free Space for the Community
As per the announcements made by the Green City Board, entry to the swimming area is intended to be completely free of charge. They do not plan to introduce any fees for using the pools.
Opening Hours and Access to Zakrzówek
The Zakrzówek area is open continuously, which includes the pools. However, in accordance with the bathing regulations, the use of the facility is only allowed during the lifeguard shifts, which are between 10:00 and 18:00. The pools are available 7 days a week.
For those arriving by car, parking spaces at Zakrzówek are located on Norymberska and Wyłom streets.
