Millionth Tourist at the Wieliczka Salt Mine – Historic Achievement in 2024

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, one of the most important tourist destinations in Poland, has achieved yet another significant milestone in 2024. On August 8th, the millionth tourist of the year descended into the historic underground corridors. This exceptional achievement marks the first time since the record year of 2019 that this milestone has been reached in such a short period. The lucky visitor, Ewelina Krawczyk from Sieradz, visited the mine with her husband Przemysław and son Aleksander. This event was not only a personal surprise for the family but also a symbolic moment for the mine, which continues to grow in popularity.

A Family Vacation with a Surprise – The Story of Mrs. Ewelina

Mrs. Ewelina Krawczyk, who visited the Wieliczka underground as a child, decided to return to this magical place during this vacation to show it to her family. “This is our first day of vacation, and we’ve already been met with such a surprise! I wanted us to see this place together as a family,” she said, touched by the ceremonial welcome organized by the mine. The surprise and joy were even greater as no one in the family expected such a turn of events. To celebrate this special occasion, Mrs. Ewelina received a salt souvenir and a voucher for a selected attraction offered by the mine. The options included a pair of tickets for the New Year's concert featuring the Krakow Opera in the Warsaw chamber, an overnight stay 135 meters underground in the mine’s Health Resort for 4 people, or a family tour of the Miner's Route, which offers an interactive adventure in the style of a real miner.

Impressive Tourism Statistics – The Growing Popularity of the Mine

Reaching a million tourists in just 219 days of the tourist year is a result that not only reflects the growing popularity of the mine but also highlights its unmatched appeal compared to other landmarks. In 2024, the number of visitors increased by 13% compared to the same period in 2023, when the mine hosted 838.7 thousand people. Surpassing the million-visitor mark two weeks earlier than in the previous year brings the mine closer to the record result of 2019, when the millionth tourist arrived on July 25th, and over 1.863 million guests visited the mine by the end of the year.

Tourist Demographics – Who Are the Visitors?

The year 2024 also brought interesting changes in the structure of tourists visiting the Wieliczka Salt Mine. In the first seven months of this year, the number of visitors reached 947.2 thousand, with 60% being international tourists. The largest group of foreign visitors were from the United Kingdom, with 137 thousand Brits touring the underground passages. Italians and French tourists also showed great interest, representing 42 thousand and 39.7 thousand visitors, respectively. These three nationalities together made up 39% of all international traffic in the mine.

Another noteworthy aspect is the increase in the number of tourists from non-European countries. The number of visitors from Arab countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, has significantly increased. Additionally, the number of guests from Turkey and Serbia doubled, while the number of tourists from the Philippines nearly tripled. The mine is also attracting tourists from distant countries like Japan, Honduras, India, and Canada, indicating its growing international reputation.

Conclusion – The Wieliczka Salt Mine as a Global Attraction

The Wieliczka Salt Mine continues to attract tourists from all over the world, offering unforgettable experiences and magnificent monuments. The steadily increasing number of visitors attests to the enduring popularity of this unique site, which sets new attendance records year after year. It's worth noting that among the visitors, English was the most popular foreign language used during tours, surpassing Polish by 2%. These results show that the Wieliczka Salt Mine remains not only a significant cultural heritage of Poland but also a global attraction that draws tourists from the farthest corners of the world. The continuously growing interest from both domestic and international visitors proves that Wieliczka is a must-see destination that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
