Where Did the Tradition Come From?
The roots of this floral painting tradition stretch back to the 19th century, when village women began covering soot stains from their stoves with white spots called “floats.” Over time, the floats turned into flowers – first painted with milk and lime, later with colorful pigments.
These decorations eventually moved outdoors, with lime-painted flowers appearing on exterior walls, fences, and barns. The unique local style was born.
How Zalipie Became Famous
For decades, this rural artistry remained a local secret – until 1905, when Austrian ethnographer Władysław Hickel wrote about it in a magazine called Lud. The article captured national attention, as Polish intellectuals and artists were fascinated by rural life and folk culture.
Suddenly, Zalipie was no longer just a quiet village – it became a symbol of Poland’s living traditions, comparable to Zakopane’s highlander heritage or the wooden churches of the south.
War, Revival and the House of Painters
Though both world wars nearly erased the tradition, local women – known as Zalipianki – kept it alive. In 1948, a national competition called “The Painted Cottage” was launched, encouraging villagers to restore and expand the tradition. The contest is still held every year.
One of Zalipie’s most influential artists was Felicja Curyłowa, who painted every surface of her home. Today, her cottage operates as a folk art museum and remains one of the highlights of a visit.
What to Expect in Zalipie Today
Don’t expect a staged open-air museum – Zalipie is a living village, where people still go about their everyday life. There are no souvenir stands or food stalls, but you’ll find open homes with painted interiors (often marked with signs like “tip for paint appreciated”).
If you want to explore the most beautiful cottages, start at the House of Painters (Zagroda Felicji Curyłowej), which provides maps, historical background, and local insight.
Some homeowners welcome visitors, others prefer privacy – so be respectful and look for posted signs. Even walking through the village is a quiet pleasure: you’ll spot hand-painted wells, tiny flower-covered chapels, and even decorated beehives.
