85th Anniversary of the First Transport of Poles to Auschwitz – 14 June 2025

On 14 June 2025, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum will mark the 85th anniversary of the first mass transport of Poles to the Nazi German concentration camp Auschwitz. On this day in 1940, 728 Polish prisoners were deported from the prison in Tarnów to the newly established camp in Oświęcim. This date is recognised as the official beginning of Auschwitz’s operation.

Who Were the First Prisoners of Auschwitz?

The first transport included young Poles: scouts, teachers, students, civil servants, clergy, and resistance members, as well as those arrested while trying to reach Polish military units abroad. The youngest was just 16 years old. Their fate symbolises the beginning of repression that eventually led to mass extermination.
