Completion of the First Phase of Works on the KL Plaszow Museum and the Upcoming Exhibition Opening
The KL Plaszow Museum project, involving the transformation of a 37-hectare site once occupied by a Nazi concentration camp, has entered a decisive phase. The first phase of work, focused on the renovation and development of this historical area, has come to an end. This marks a significant step towards the realization of a full museum infrastructure, which will in the future include elements such as the Grey House and a planned Memorial.
The primary goal of these efforts was to preserve the authenticity of the site without introducing new reconstructions. To achieve this, the project team focused on highlighting historical paths, renovating the Monument to the Victims of Fascism, and creating terraced stairs to facilitate access to different parts of the site while preserving its historical context.
The museum decided on an open approach to the space, opting not to fence off the area, thus allowing residents and tourists to freely cross the boundaries of the former camp. Small architectural elements such as benches and trash cans, along with informational pylons and plaques, have been designed to facilitate visiting and encourage reflection on the history of this place.
The culmination of this phase will be the opening of a new outdoor exhibition scheduled for March 15th. This exhibition, utilizing curatorial texts, prisoners' accounts, and illustrative material, aims to deeply immerse visitors in the history of KL Plaszow, giving a human dimension to the tragedy that took place here. The exhibition is designed not only to educate but also to humanize the past by bringing closer the individual fates of the prisoners.
Thanks to these efforts, the KL Plaszow Museum is becoming a place that not only commemorates the history and victims of the camp but also serves as an educational space, inspiring reflection on history, memory, and our common future. The ultimate goal of the project, which includes the expansion of museum infrastructure and the creation of a commemorative space, aims not only to preserve the memory of the past but also to convey knowledge of the history of KL Plaszow to a wider audience.
