Kraków-Płaszów Concentration Camp: Museum & Memorial
Overview
The KL Płaszów Museum-Memorial is a moving site of immense historical significance, presenting the brutal history of the Nazi concentration camp in Krakow.
The KL Płaszów Museum-Memorial is located at the site of the Nazi labor and concentration camp, which was operational between 1942–1945. The camp's history began in October 1942 when the Nazis established it in the districts of Podgórze and Wola Duchacka in Krakow. KL Płaszów became a death camp for thousands of Jews and Poles, as well as individuals of other nationalities. It is estimated that over 35,000 people were detained here during the camp's operation, with its death toll estimated at about 6,000.
Today, the KL Płaszów Museum-Memorial is an outdoor exhibition open to visitors, allowing them to understand the brutal history of the camp. This open-air exhibition includes 19 informational boards that narrate the camp's history through archival photos, fragments of prisoner accounts, and short historical pieces. The exhibition is free and open to everyone, making it easily accessible to the public.
The KL Płaszów Museum-Memorial continues to develop, with ambitious plans for the future. The museum's expansion work is already advanced, with completion planned for 2025. The future permanent exhibition will enable visitors to understand the full context of KL Płaszów's history and its significance to the entire Holocaust period. Additionally, the project of the permanent exhibition can be viewed online at the museum's website.
