Planning Your Visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most extraordinary underground attractions in Europe. Just 20 km from Krakow, it’s been drawing visitors for centuries – and it’s easy to see why. With UNESCO World Heritage status and breathtaking salt-carved chapels, this mine is a true Polish treasure.

Wondering how best to plan your visit? Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Getting There from Krakow

You can reach Wieliczka by car, train, or bus from Krakow – but for comfort and ease, many visitors choose organized tours. These usually include transport from central meeting points or hotel pick-up, along with pre-booked entry, helping you avoid queues and saving valuable time.

📍You can also buy skip-the-line tickets, which let you enter independently at your chosen time.
📍 Drop-off near the entrance makes everything smooth and convenient.

Which Route Should You Choose?

There are two main visitor routes: the Tourist Route and the Miners’ Route – and they offer very different experiences.

🚶‍♂️ Tourist Route – The Best Option for First-Time Visitors

This is the classic route and by far the most popular. If you want to see Wieliczka’s most famous underground marvels, like the Chapel of St. Kinga, underground lakes, salt sculptures and vast chambers, this is the tour for you.

Quick facts:

  • Approx. 2 hours
  • 3.5 km of walking
  • 135 metres deep
  • Guided only
  • Starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft
  • Open to all ages

Please note:
You’ll go down 800 stairs, so it’s not suitable for everyone. However, a version of the route partially adapted for visitors with disabilities is available upon request – contact the mine or your tour provider in advance to arrange it.

  • Constant temperature: 17–18°C
  • Wear warm, non-slip shoes
  • Luggage must not exceed 35 × 20 × 20 cm

🚫 Smoking, open flames, torches, and animals are not allowed underground.

⛏️ Miners’ Route – A Fun, Alternative Adventure

This route offers a completely different experience. You won’t see the chapels or lakes, but instead become a novice miner for a few hours! Equipped with a helmet, lamp, and overalls, you’ll perform simulated tasks and explore raw, unrefined tunnels under the guidance of a “foreman.”

  • Approx. 2 hours
  • 2 km of walking
  • 101 metres deep
  • Starts at the Regis Shaft
  • Minimum age: 10 years
  • Not adapted for people with mobility impairments

This is a great option for repeat visitors or small groups of friends looking for something different – but it’s not a substitute for the Tourist Route if you’ve never been before.

More Attractions in Wieliczka

Even after your underground tour, there’s still more to explore above ground!

🌫️ Graduation Tower – Natural Inhalation Therapy

Located in St. Kinga’s Park near the Daniłowicz Shaft, this wooden structure emits salt-rich mist that helps clear your lungs and supports relaxation. It’s ideal for allergy sufferers and those seeking fresh, mineral-filled air.

  • Recommended stay: ~30 minutes
  • Dress in breathable clothes – the brine is absorbed through the skin
  • No toilets inside
  • Small bags only (max 35 × 20 × 20 cm)
  • Partially wheelchair accessible on the ground floor
  • Guide dogs allowed
  • Tickets available on-site

🏰 Żupny Castle – The Salt Mine’s Historic Headquarters

Just a short walk from the mine’s entrance, the Żupny Castle was once the administrative centre of the saltworks. Today, it houses part of the Cracow Saltworks Museum, with exhibitions on mining history, medieval tools, and traditional salt art.

It’s a perfect addition to your visit – especially if you’re interested in the deeper history behind the mine.
