Overview

A significant portion of the Małopolskie Voivodeship is occupied by the Carpathians. It is enough to move away just a few kilometers from Krakow to find yourself on their hills.
These beautiful mountains located in central Europe, between the Alps in the west and the Caucasus in the east, constitute the highest mountain chain between the above-mentioned ranges.

A large part of the Carpathians in Małopolska is the forested Beskid (Makowski, Wyspowy, Sądecki, Żywiecki, and Gorce). The gentle slopes and ridges covered with clearings are ideal for hiking, cycling, and sometimes even horseback riding. The highest peak in this part of the Carpathians is Babia Góra (1725 m above sea level) located on the Polish-Slovak border.

A special tourist area is the Pieniny Mountains, which we also share with Slovakia. Here rise the Three Crowns (982 m above sea level) – the symbol of the Pieniny Mountains and an incomparable vantage point. The southern slopes are washed by the swift current of the Dunajec River. Its picturesque gorge is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

The crown of the Polish Carpathians is formed by the Tatra Mountains with the highest peak in Poland – Rysy (2499 m above sea level). The richness of the natural landscape, varied postglacial relief, and rare species of plants and animals testify to the extraordinary attractiveness of this place.

The mountains are not just beautiful views and unforgettable landscapes, but also cultural heritage. The Carpathians have numerous monuments, especially of wooden architecture, including houses of worship and Orthodox churches entered on the UNESCO list.
In winter, you can enjoy numerous ski slopes which offer well-groomed slopes of various difficulty. The Carpathian valleys also offer charming restaurants. There are springs of healing mineral and thermal waters in the spa towns. The Podhale thermal pools will additionally provide relaxation and fun in a health-oriented setting.

The main hubs of summer and winter tourism are Zakopane, Rabka-Zdrój, Krynica-Zdrój, and Szczawnica together with Krościenko.
