The most important public space

The Old Town Square was built in the 13th century, during the city's incorporation under the Magdeburg Law. From the very beginning, it was as a center of commercial, social, religious, political and cultural life. It is situated at the intersection of former trade routes and as many as 11 streets. The square plan with a side of just over 200 m makes it one of the largest markets in Europe. In 1978 UNESCO placed the Main Square as part of the Old Town Kraków on the list of World Heritage Sites.

An attraction in itself

Market Square brings together everything that is most characteristic and recognizable for the city. Here are located important monuments, such as St. Mary's Basilica with the famous Altar by Wit Stwosz, the Cloth Hall, the Church of St. Wojciech, the Town Hall Tower and the Adam Mickiewicz Monument, which is a favorite meeting point for Cracovians. Moreover, it is surrounded by old brick buildings and palaces, and almost all of them are several centuries old. They house, among others, The Historical Museum of the City of Krakow and the International Cultural Center, as well as numerous cafes, pubs and restaurants with famous Wierzynek, Wentzl or Hawełka. It is in the central square of Krakow that cultural events, festivals, concerts and fairs are organized, e.g. the Christmas Market. The unique atmosphere of the Krakow market is complemented by a trumpet signal called Hejnał mariacki played every hour, horse-drawn carriages and hundreds of pigeons, which, according to legend, are knights enchanted in birds.
