St. Mary’s Basilica is a must-see for everyone who visits Cracow. You literally can’t miss it. It would be hard since it’s adjacent to the Main Market Square – the beating heart of the historic part of the city. Even if you don’t recognise this impressive medieval church from the start, you’ll definitely hear it!
It’s one of its towers from where the iconic Trumpet Call is played every hour. Did you know that this unique melody has a very long and dramatic history that leads back to the 14thcentury? In the Middle Ages, it was used as a warning – it announced the arrival of the Mongol Hordes. Now, it’s become one of the most identifiable symbols of Poland’s former capital.
The St. Mary’s Basilica’s history starts in the 14th century. It was then when it was entirely rebuilt after the Mongol Hordes invasion. It’s a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture. You will be amazed by the shape of the building and the intricate decoration of the interior. Just go inside and immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere which makes the time slow down for a while. Take a deep breath and just let yourself feel.
Now look up and discover the stunning, lavishly decorated rib vault. Take a few steps forward to discover the heart of the St. Mary’s Basilica and its most valuable treasure: the Veit Stoss Altarpiece which was carved in wood. It took the artist more than 20 years to finish this masterpiece. Come closer and discover the altar’s intricate composition. The precision of the carving will astound you! We promise: it’s going to be one of the most memorable experiences from your journey to Cracow!
Don’t forget to look around, too! The iconic altar is surrounded by incredible polychrome paintings of the most important Polish artists, such as Jan Matejko, Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer.
If you’re up to the challenge, you can climb to the very top of one of the church towers. It’s worth the effort – the skyline of the Old Town looks just marvellous from there.
No matter how many times you will visit St Mary’s Church in Cracow, you’ll discover something new every time you’re there. Plan your trip now!
